There’s a Washington Post article today reacting to a new study that seems to hint that new technologies, such as cell phones and instant messaging actually help families stay closer.

This is an easy find for me as I live in a different city from all of my immediate relatives, but still am able to communicate with them regularly, and meaningfully.  As instant messaging, texting, and cell phones become more and more familiar and comfortable with people, it allows the focus of conversations to  be more about the other person.

Which brings me to my next conclusion – that community focused technologies are good for the culture.  When software is free and easy to use, you get around to actually using it rather than figuring out how it works.  This is the beautiful thing about a community oriented-platform – that, being built from bottom up, users are able to create a computing experience that is comfortable to them and their needs, even in a dynamically changing world.
